Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We have answers.
Where are lessons held?
Lessons are held either virtually or in-person at a location in Overland Park, KS.
What type of lessons are suitable for my child?
We offer both in-person and virtual classes in piano & voice. We recommend that students begin with Piano Club or Group Singing class before they take private lessons.
45-minute group preschool piano classes
A great start for 3.5–5-year-old beginner students. This program offers kids a great introduction to the piano and to music as a whole. Rhythm, technique, aural skills, and theory are all taught through fun and interactive activities and lessons.
45-minute group Piano Club classes
A great option for kids who want a social & interactive environment for lessons. This program builds foundational piano & music skills as well as prepares students for both group & solo playing. We find students are more confident when they learn in groups.
30-min group voice
Singing is a great skill to learn as a group and students love the flexibility of being able to sing at home! Our students quickly gain confidence & skills.
30-45 minute private piano & voice (in-person & virtual)
Suitable for students who are late elementary – intermediate players. These often are students know the basics already and are ready to invest more time and practice into learning. They want to advance their knowledge, technical skills, and repertoire.
Do I need an instrument at my home?
Yes, piano students will need either an acoustic or electric piano or a keyboard with weighted keys. Students in Group Preschool Piano Classes will not be required to practice but having an instrument in the home will allow them to try what they have learned in the group.
Voice students already own their own instrument!
How much practice is necessary?
Your student will get the most out of lessons when he or she is practicing at home. The most important thing is that practice happens as a routine – much like homework or brushing their teeth! Many families find practice before school is a great time to make sure practice happens every day. Quality and consistency is better than quantity, but here are some suggested guidelines:
- Young students and beginners: 10-20 minutes a day
- Elementary students: 20-30 minutes a day
- Intermediate students: 30-45 minutes a day
- Advanced students: 45-60 minutes a day
Your child’s interest in piano or voice will probably not be 100% consistent; but to be successful, you will need to be consistent in your encouragement and commitment to music lessons. Your child may say, “I don’t want to practice” or “I want to quit,” etc. In most cases, simply acknowledge your child’s comments, and go on with your normal routine just as you would if your child said “I don’t want to brush my teeth.” Enthusiasm for something new is common, while endurance through the rough parts is rare – but always worth it!
What books do I need and where do I get them?
Books, materials and supplemental music are all included in the tuition.
At Playtime Music Academy, we use different books and methods to suit different learning styles but some of the most commonly used series include Piano Adventures and Piano Pronto as well as supplemental sheet music and lead sheets from various artists and composers. We’re constantly researching new materials to find the music that inspires each and every student!
What’s the youngest age student you will teach?
We teach students as young as 3 1/2 years old in the Preschool Group Piano Class. Learning music at a young age can be a wonderful head start for your child. We focus on strong foundations as well as creative play in all our lessons and provide developmentally appropriate lessons for preschool/kindergarten-aged students.
Do your students get opportunities to perform?
Yes! Getting to share music with others is one of the best parts of learning to play an instrument! Performance also increases students’ confidence and is a great motivator for practice.
Playtime Music Academy offers three main in-person recitals every year in addition to two virtual recitals!
Our in-person recitals are our Fall Pops, Christmas Recital and Spring Recital, as well as enrichment workshops that may have a performance component.
Our pre-school group classes have the option to play in our Teddy Bear Recital.
Do you offer make-up lessons?
As a student of the Keys to Praise studio your tuition covers more than lessons each week. (See “What does my tuition include?” on the Studio Policies page). Enrollment means being a member of the studio with all the additional benefits that provides. One of those benefits is a weekly spot set aside just for your child.
In the event of missing a lesson, parents are responsible to contact the teacher 24 hours in advance. In some cases (illness or lack of transportation, for example) an online lesson may replace an in-person lesson. If an online lesson is not indicated and if 24 hour notice is given, a make-up lesson may be arranged, but due to teacher scheduling constraints cannot be guaranteed. If a student cancels or no-shows to the make-up lesson, the lesson is forfeited. Lessons missed by a teacher will be rescheduled.
When the above options are not viable, we encourage students to continue practicing so they can return to their lesson the following week prepared to move ahead.
How can I pay my tuition?
For ease and convenience, tuition is paid through automatic debit or credit card withdrawal on the 1st of the month during the school year (August-May). This can be set up through the Parent Portal. A studio fee (to cover books, materials, awards and incentives) will be charged in the first month of each new semester (Fall semester begins in August. Spring semester begins in January).
